Chapter 26

My fingers dug into the wet dirt. I clawed through the mud, frantic as I fought my way to Alex. The bond warmed my chest with his golden glow.

Each step led me closer.

I stumbled once, but I caught myself. Briars tore at my sleeves, drawing blood on my arms. Tears filled my eyes as I scrambled up the hill. I ran toward him at full speed, my arms outstretched, and—

Sienna stepped out of the darkness, blocking my path.

I skidded to a stop, fighting to catch my breath, and unsheathed the sword. “Move.”

Instead of replying, the she-wolf lunged at me with her claws out.

I fumbled, tripping over an unearthed root, and she closed the distance between us in a flash. Had she always moved like this?

I twisted away from her, but I was too slow.

Sienna snarled, her teeth bared in my face, and grabbed my wrist. Her crushing grip uncurled my fingers, and the hilt of the sword slipped from my grasp.

The noise when it clattered to the ground was deafening.

“L-let me go—” I said, wrestling against the force of her assault. The pain dragged me to the earth. “A-Alex is—”

She shoved me backward, and I lost my balance. I winced when my tailbone collided with the wet dirt, and the impact forced the air from my lungs.

The heat in my chest was fading. Alex was getting farther away.

Panic gripped my ribcage. My fangs broke through my gums, and I fought to my knees, preparing to launch myself at her.

The tip of the silver blade glimmered at the base of my throat, and I froze.

My eyes traveled along the length of cold metal until they landed on Sienna’s face. When I spoke, my question was a rough wheeze. “Haku?”

The figure in front of me shimmered and warped. Sienna disappeared into a cloud of black smoke, and a taller frame took her place.

Haku sighed as he flipped the sword around to offer me the handle. “The Unseelie Prince has your pet dog.”

My ears burned hot. “You . . . tried to trick me?”

His lip pressed into a thin line. “It was Alex’s idea. He doesn’t want you running into danger.”

“I don’t care.” I slid the sword into its sheath and shoved past him. Touching a hand to my chest, I felt the bond. “I have to help him.”

“There’s nothing you can do for Alex now.” Haku kept his distance. “The prince sent—”

“Dullahan, right?” I asked, and his head nodded in response. “Some came for us, too.”

He jerked a hand through his red hair. “Why are you alone? Did they take Sienna?”

I shook my head. “No. She took off and left me behind.”

“If you’ve seen the headless riders, then you know there’s no way we can get him back. Let’s find a way out of here.”

I gritted my teeth. “We can’t leave him, Haku. You vowed to help him.”

“And you promised to return my jewel, remember? It’s in your stomach.” He frowned as he watched me rub the fading bruises he’d left on my arm.
